Safe & effective administration of chemo/biotherapy according to ONS standards.
Validates informed consent
Accurately determines BSA
Reviews laboratory values before administration to determine patient eligibility
Administers appropriate pre-medications and/or hydration to prevent/minimize any potential reactions, up to and including anaphylaxis
Validates physician order, dose calculation, patient identity with another qualified RN, MD or pharmacist
Constantly monitors patient response to therapy and adapts as necessary
Demonstrates appropriate prevention/management of extravasation of any vesicant
Manages any untoward reaction up to and including anaphylaxis
Adheres to NIOSH standards for "safe handling" of cytotoxic agents
Dons appropriate PPE when potential for contact with cytotoxic agent
Administers cytotoxic agents via specialized closed system
Disposes of all materials coming in contact with cytotoxic agents in appropriate biohazard containers
Demonstrates appropriate containment and management of any spill including Code Orange
Practices the care and maintenance of central venous access devices (CVADs) and peripheral venous catheters according to INS (Intravenous Nurses' Society) standards
Performs venipuncture according to type of therapy to be administered. Includes appropriate site selection, preparation and catheter selection
Accesses and validates patency and placement of CVADs using appropriate site preparation and equipment
Demonstrates flushing CVAD with appropriate fluid at the appropriate time interval to maintain safe and efficient function
Performs safe administration of vesicants utilizing approved precautions.
Two years oncology nursing experience preferred.
Current RN license within the state of practice.
Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required.
OCN preferred. If not OCN, required within 2 years of hire.
ONS Chemo/biotherapy certification preferred. If not, required within 6 months of hire.
Skills: Basic computer knowledge.
