The EEG Technician (R.EEG.T) is responsible for the acquisition of EEG testing to include routing EEG, continuous EEG and intra-operative EEG monitoring. The EEG Technician will also perform Evoked Potential testing to include VER and BAER. The EEG Technician assists physicians in the performance of specialized testing as appropriate. Follows infection control guidelines. Performs all office duties including executing departmental paperwork, filing, and test-resulting, and conducting front office duties. Compiles with hospital and departmental policies and procedures and performs the hospital and departmental improvement plan. Performs all other duties, including the training of personnel and special assignments. Requires minimal supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – Other duties may be assigned.

  • Acquires accurate records and patient data and eliminates artifacts.

  • Calibrates diagnostic equipment. Keeps equipment clean and in manufacturer recommended condition. Follows infection guidelines.

  • Executes department paperwork, files and edits records, distributes records to designated areas.

  • Knowledgeable and competent to operate the EEG System to include patient recording, file management and CD-R recording.

  • Performs all other duties, including the training of personnel.

  • Knowledgeable and proficient utilizing the international 10/20 system for electrode placement.

  • Performs EEG's either in the lab or at the patient bedside.

  • Obtains clean and artifact free recordings.

  • Knowledgeable of Operating Room procedures, including infection control, dress attire and scheduling.

  • Documents an accurate patient history on all recordings to include history of illness, medications and recording interventions.

  • Knowledgeable and competent to perform BAER and VER testing which includes accurate identification of appropriate waveforms.

  • Assist the physician in performing EMG studies as necessary.

  • Performs intra-operative EEG monitoring and communicates potential abnormalities to the surgeon.

  • Safely applies electrodes for long-term recordings using collodion and acetone.

     

DEPARTMENTAL ACCOUNTABILITIES-Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintains a clean work environment. Keeps recording equipment clean, electrodes disinfected an patient care areas free of debris.

  • Maintains good attendance standards, has infrequent sick call and tardiness.

  • Helps to track and maintain accurate departmental medical records. Includes archiving and retrieval for future use.

  • Cleans and maintains Hydrocalculators.

  • Demonstrates proficiency using Powerchart to retrieve medical information for patient care.

  • Charges for all patient procedures.

  • Helps to orient and train new employees.

  • Actively assists and supports departmental activities to ensure that operational and salary expenses are equal to or less than approved budget.

  • Understands the principles and concepts of Performance Improvement. Looks for opportunities and solutions for process improvements and seeks to improve job skills.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma required

  • One (1) year of experience in related field preferred

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Electroencephalography required

  • Registered in EEG (R.EEG.T)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS Provider) certification from American Heart Association required.
